Winter Driving Tips

As the snow storms are starting to roll in for the winter season, the roads will become much more hazardous for mountain driving when covered with snow and ice.  Following are a few tips to help you face winter driving conditions when traveling in the mountains:

Car Preparations

• Make sure to check all fluid levels
• Check your battery to make sure it is adequately charged
• Be sure to keep at least a half tank of gas in the vehicle, just in case you encounter delays on the road
• Make sure all lights are working properly

Winter Driving Kit

• Charge your cell phone before hitting the road
• Keep an emergency road it with items like: tire chains, sand or kitty litter (for traction, if needed), small shovel, flashlight, booster cables, and first-aid kit
• Bring extra clothing items for your and your passengers in the event of a heavy traffic jam or breaking down: jackets, gloves, blankets, and hats
• Pack food and water (even for your four-legged friends!)

Drive Smart

• Remember, driving on ice and snow covered roads slows down acceleration and deceleration.  So be sure to leave plenty of space in between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you to allow for proper stopping distance.
• Avoid any unnecessary lane changes as sometimes the area in between the lanes can become icy.
• Don’t brake and turn at the same time as this can make your tires lose traction.

Use Common Sense

• Don’t blindly follow your GPS, especially in the mountains. If it’s looking like it will direct you to a road that doesn’t look maintained or well-traveled, turn around!
• If you do get stuck, stay with your vehicle. It’s much easier for a tow company or authorities to find you there.
• Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather.
