Heavenly Holidays New Year’s Eve Celebration
We all know that younger children all want to stay up until midnight to make it to the New Year. But parents don’t always want their youngsters staying up until midnight. Luckily, South Lake Tahoe has a great solution: have a New Year’s Eve celebration timed with New York City’s Time Square event! Celebrate the New Year at 9:00pm!
The festivities kick off at 6:00pm in the Heavenly Village. Family friendly entertainment includes fire dancers, games, face-painting and a photo booth to preserve your memories. The ice rink will be open for those who want to ice skate, and live music will be playing all evening. There is also a spectacular ice sculpting exhibit that takes place throughout the village. Gaze at completed ice sculptures, or marvel at the artists while they wield chainsaws to create their icy art.
South Lake Tahoe is no Times Square, but we do have our own version of the midnight Ball Drop. At 9:00pm Pacific Time, look up at the Heavenly Mountain Gondola and you will see one special gondola all lit up and heading down the mountain. The gondola-ball will be at the bottom at 9:00pm! At 9:00pm at the East coast New Year, a spectacular fireworks show begins to celebrate 2016.
For those too young to ring in the actual New Year in one of the casinos, they can get a full celebration with the Heavenly Holidays New Year’s Eve Celebration. For those you are not ready to stop the party, stay in the Village at any of the local bars or head to the casinos to bring in the actual New Year.
So we know that you reserved your luxury vacation rental for more than just one night, so what else is there to do in South Lake Tahoe for the time surround New Year’s Eve? Here are just a few of our favorite South Lake Tahoe holiday activities!
Spend the day on Heavenly Mountain
If you are spending New Years in South Lake Tahoe, heading up the Heavenly gondola is a must for both skiers and non-skiers. And why not start 2016 with some gorgeous views and some turns on the slopes? For the skiers and riders, you already know that Heavenly Mountain Resort offers the best views of Lake Tahoe out of all the Lake Tahoe ski resorts! When skiing down from the chairlifts you almost feel like you are going to ski into Lake Tahoe.
Those in the family that don’t ski or snowboard, can purchase a sightseeing ticket to take the gondola up to the top of the mountain. Stop at the gondola mid-station for a photo opportunity, and head up to Tamarack Lodge for some food and drinks. Heavenly also has a tubing hill at Tamarack Lodge, where you and your family can race each other down to the bottom.
Visit Kirkwood Mountain and Cross Country Center
Because of the location at the top of the Sierra Crest coupled with the high elevations, Kirkwood usually receives more snow than South Lake Tahoe. Because of that, you are always guaranteed a great day of skiing and riding. When at the top of the mountain, the views of the surrounding mountains covered in snow are breathtaking.
If you are not a big skier or rider, Kirkwood offers many alternatives. Our favorite is the Cross Country Snowshoe Center. It does not matter if you are a seasoned Nordic skier, or a newbie there are trails that will be perfect for you. Take snowshoe adventure with your family, and bring some hot chocolate with you to enjoy in one of the warming huts along the trail. While you are out in the woods, stop to build a snowman or a snow cave. There is even a kid friendly trail that has animal cut-outs on the side of the trail, and informative flip-up signs to keep them entertained.
Take a Sleigh or Carriage Ride
Give your kids the New Year’s gift of a true sleigh ride. Ride over the meadow and through the woods with Borges Sleigh and Carriage Rides. Located just passed the casinos by MontBleu Resort & Casino, this is a must stop for families with younger children. Hop on one of the red sleighs, and wrap up in a blanket as you are pulled through the snowy meadow by horses. You will want to bring your camera to get some photos of your family with the horses and Lake Tahoe in the background. After the ride, pet the horses and ask if you can give them a treat. If you are lucky, it might even start snowing during your ride! Go To Website
