We recently enjoyed a delicious meal at Azul Latin Kitchen, and are happy to say that we will all definitely return! This restaurant is not the first for these owners, as they also own the popular Basecamp Pizza in Heavenly Village, and Fireside Pizza Co. in Squaw Valley. If you have ever eaten at either of the above pizza joints, you already know the high quality of the food, service and overall great experience! And we are happy to announce that Azul is no different.
The Atmosphere
Walking in, you are met with what we are calling an eclectic rustic chic motif. There are chandeliers made with old milk cartons, and behind the bar they have created shelves with different sized boxes, and old chests all painted to look old and worn. This is offset by blue booths and bright colors on the chalkboards. A combination of booths and stables are spread throughout the main dining room, and the bar area is separated with a low partition. The bar area has a few high tables, a large booth and seating at the bar itself. Overall Azul has a casual and relaxed ambiance.
The Food
The Buckingham ladies recently enjoyed a delicious lunch at Azul, and some of us have also visited for a few happy hours. The cuisine is described as Caribbean, Mexican and Latin American, with many of the food choices featuring their rotisserie chicken. The starters include homemade chips with your choice of red salsa, queso, guacamole, shrimp ceviche (or all four) and a crispy calamari. We highly recommend the salsa and the guacamole (we devoured it in minutes).
The rest of the menu consists of salads, shared plates, various taco choices, special plates and a few side options.
Our table ordered a few different tacos (three for $12.50), the Enchilada Suizas, and the Macho Salad. The tacos were different than I have ever tasted (in a good way). Your taco choices include (but are not limited to): Coconut Pork Taco, Thai Curry Taco, Calamari Con Chilli and an Ancho Mole Chicken Taco. We had no complaints and the overall consensus is that we will return to try different items on the menu.
The Spirits
If you like tequila, this is the bar in South Lake Tahoe for you! They have over 25 different tequilas for consumption. Not sure what your favorite is? Order one of Azul’s Tequila Flights, which features three different tequila shots ($14+).
The tequila cocktails are reasonably priced and a few of them even come in a bowl for you and some friends to share. If you are not a tequila fan, they still have a normal menu of cocktails and beers on tap. One of our favorite things we learned is that they have happy hour from 2pm – 6pm EVERYDAY! We couldn’t find anything to complain about that.
So, if you have not already, we recommend that you stop on by Azul and try out their menu for yourself!
