Hiking in South Lake Tahoe is a Spring to Fall favorite. Some hikes in the area can be too much for a stroller or too steep for your 3-year old . Check out these great hiking trails for you and your little ones to all enjoy.
Fallen Leaf Lake: This flat trail along the lake is perfect for the young members of the family who want to swim and run around in a safe environment. The mountain scenery surrounding the lake will satisfy the whole family’s craving for Tahoe views on your kid friendly hike in South Lake Tahoe.
To Get There: Take Highway 89 and turn left on Fallen Leaf Road. Drive past the campground and park before campsite #75. There are no fees involved for this hike.
Vikingsholm at Emerald Bay: This Emerald Bay hike may be a bit steep for the strollers, but once you reach the Vikingsholm Castle at Emerald Bay, you will know it is worth it. This paved trail is 2 miles round trip with areas for picnicking along the way. Once you reach the Castle, pay a small fee for a 30 minute tour. The Vikingsholm Castle is a can’t miss kid friendly hike for your young family in South Lake Tahoe. Plus, kids 6 and under are free.
To Get There: Take the 89 around to the West shore and turn right at the Emerald Bay parking lot. Parking is $3 and the tours are $3-5.
Heavenly Gondola Trails: This easy summer South Lake Tahoe hike includes the kid-favorite Heavenly Gondola ride up to the top. On your way up, don’t forget to stop off at the Observation Deck at Heavenly, featuring lake views you cannot find anywhere. Once up the Gondola, ask the Heavenly employees in red to point you to the East Peak Trail. This is the calmest of the Heavenly Gondola trails and great for the little ones.
To Get There: The Heavenly Gondola picks up passengers at Stateline in the Heavenly Village. Grab a ticket, kids under 4 are free!
Angora Lakes: This ½ mile easy hike brings your whole group to adventure-filled lakes. Enjoy rowboating, swimming or even cliff diving on their giant rocks surrounding the lakes. Make a whole day out of your hike to Angora Lakes and bring lunch and tubes to relax in.
To Get There: Take Hwy 89 and turn left on Fallen Leaf Road. Turn left at the first paved road. Continue to Forest Service Road 12N14 and turn right. Continue past Angora Lookout to the road’s end at the parking lot.
