What is your favorite South Lake Tahoe event? For many, this is the Fourth of July holiday and coming up for the fireworks. However, for some the favorite time to visit South Lake Tahoe is for the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship! Taking place in mid-July, it is back for the 27th year at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

Golf With a View
There is no better location in all of Lake Tahoe than Edgewood Tahoe for a round of golf. The course has been rated by Golf Digest Magazine as one of “America’s Top Golf Courses,” and it is easy to see why. Designed by George Fazio, it has been described as a challenging course but still fair. Players can choose from four sets of tees offering a range of lengths for all skill levels. If you are an avid golfer, make it on your bucket list to play this course someday.
Being located right on the shores of Lake Tahoe, Edgewood Tahoe offers great spectator viewing spots. You can walk around the course with your favorite player, or set up your chairs at your favorite hole. Those lucky enough to have a boat (or rent one) can even drop an anchor just off the beach and watch from the water!
The Championship
In this one-of-a-kind tournament, 90 players including Pro Athletes, TV personalities, movie stars, musicians and entertainers gather together to compete for their share of a $600,000 purse. The tournament is dedicated to raising money for local charities, most notably the Stowers Institute for Medical Research. The fun kicks off Tuesday with the Tahoe South Celebrity-Am at 8:30 AM. The celebrities can also have practice rounds this day. Continuing Wednesday are more practice rounds, and at 12:40 PM the Harrah’s Celebrity-Am. On Thursday at 7:00 AM is the American Century Celeb-Am Tournament. Thursday also begins the 17th Hold Korbel Celebrity Spray off Competition, which continues each day during play. 8:00 AM on Friday is the start of the American Century Championship First Round.
The Celebrities
The Celebrity Golf Championship attracts many big names, from NFL quarterbacks to Major League Baseball pitchers. Notable players this year include Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Olympian and World Cup soccer Champion Abby Wambach, Actor Alfonso Ribeiro (last year he broke into the Carlton dance), Skier Bode Miller, Actor Brian Bumgartner, NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley, Rascal Flatts singer Jay Demarcus, NHL on NBC host Kathryn Tappen, All-Star Pitcher Tim Wakefiled, and of course singer Justin Timberlake are just a few of the celebrities you can watch. Last year the title of Winner went to Mark Mulder, and to Mark Rypien the previous year. Who will it be this year? Of course, part of what makes this event so fun is the interaction spectators get to have with the players. With various inter-tournament competitions taking place, all the players just want to have a good time.

The American Century Championship is offering complimentary tickets to all U.S. Military. All service men and women will receive two complimentary tickets. Advance tickets are available at TahoeSouth.com. $20 will get you in to the Celebrity Amateur on Tuesday, practice rounds on Wednesday, and for the American Century Celebrity-AM on Thursday. Admission for tournament rounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday is $30. Kids 10 and under can get in for free (limit two per group). If you are looking for a deal, specially priced tickets will be sold June 13 through July 24 for $3 cheaper than normal price. These can be bought at Raley’s, Bel Air and Nob Hill Foods. Stay in Luxury
Just like the July 4th holiday, vacation rentals during the time of the Celebrity Golf Championship book up rapidly. We have many luxury vacation rentals within a short drive to Edgewood, and a few that are walking distance to the tournament. Our Tahoe Woods Condominiums are located just around the block, and guests can walk from these units to the gates. Homes that are located on Kingsbury Grade are only a few miles away from Edgewood, as are rentals that are in the Zephyr Cove/Zephyr Heights area.
