Every year, tens of thousands of visitors come to South Lake Tahoe to celebrate New Years. The influx of visitors even tops our 4th of July goers! The main event for New Years Eve would have to be the downtown casino area which is on the California/Nevada state line. With thousands of people celebrating in the streets, it takes on the appearance of a miniature Times Square, complete with road closures to accommodate all of the celebrators. After midnight hits, they retreat into the casinos to party the night away in the clubs and lounges. Although the casino strip New Years celebration is exciting and an experience not to forget, there can be the odd incidents of flying debris, fights and arrests (see video below). It is definitely not an activity I would recommend for families! Aside from the casino area, there are a lot of other events taking place all over town, some for all ages.

South Shore Celebration 2010 Family New Year’s Eve in the Heavenly Village
An inaugural family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration in the Heavenly Village will ring in the New Year, starting at 2 p.m. with a rail jam near the Gondola followed by a slate of activities from 6 – 9 p.m.: a snowboard simulator; an ice sled motion simulator; showing adventure films; Jelly Bread, a Reno funk band; ice skating and roaming performers. The evening climaxes at 9 p.m. (12 a.m. EST) when an illuminated Gondola car is “dropped” from the top of Heavenly’s East Peak, and a fireworks show will end the night as the grand finale, welcoming 2011. The City of South Lake Tahoe is offering a $5 flat fee to park in the Heavenly Village garage from 3 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. on December, 31, 2010. Tahoe Tot Spot, provides young children a place for indoor play, gymnastics, art, music and fitness, is offering 50 percent off Open Play Day Passes, Dec. 27-31. At the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena, all regular admission skaters, Dec. 29-30, from 5:30 – 8 p.m., will be warmed by complimentary hot chocolate and s’mores toasted at an outdoor fire pit while skating to festive music. The indoor NHL standard-size rink is located in the Recreation Complex 1.5 miles from the Village.
